Matala Beach

Once a fishing village, Matala gained fame in the 1960s and 70s as a destination for hippies.

What makes Matala distinctive are the Neolithic caves carved into the cliffs by the sea, which were once used as Roman tombs and later as homes by hippies.

Today, it’s a charming beach town with a laid-back vibe, beautiful waters for swimming, and a small village with shops and cafes.
